A native of Los Angeles, he has traveled the world, immersing himself in diverse cultures and ancient traditions, refining his skills, and deepening his understanding of the human experience.
In recognition of his dedication, Matthew was inducted into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame in June 2014 as Teacher of the Year. His rankings include:

Beyond ranked disciplines, Matthew has spent decades training in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, various Kung Fu styles, as well as internal arts such as Qigong, and the full 8 limb system of Yoga, choosing experience over formal recognition in many cases. His passion for the wisdom of ancient cultures and their approach to movement, energy, new conscious awarenesses, and survival continues to fuel his work.
